Training Your Security Team

Just last month, our blog discussed the importance of security in your place of worship. A few days after that blog was published, we were as shocked as anyone when an ex-convict drifter walked into the December 29th service at the West Freeway Church of Christ near Forth Worth, Texas, and opened fire with a sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun during the communion service.

This life-long sponger was supposedly angry because the pastor of the church had offered him food a few days earlier instead of giving him money. He fired two blasts, killing a deacon and a volunteer member of the church’s security team who were both standing in the back of the sanctuary. The killer then turned to go toward the front of the church where the pastor was standing. That is when Jack Wilson, 71, a reserve county sheriff and firearms instructor, fired one shot from 50-feet away that struck the evil madman in the head, killing him instantly.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families and friends of Anton Wallace, 64, and Richard White, 67, who were killed by a person who should never have had access to a weapon of any kind. Their senseless deaths are a sad commentary on the state of affairs in our nations today. No matter where you stand on the gun rights issue, the facts strongly indicate that a criminal with murder in mind is going to find a way to get a gun and use it.

Teachout’s Training Solution

In just 6-seconds, Wilson stopped what could have easily turned into a massacre. He had trained all of the other volunteer members of his church security team. His years of law enforcement experience just kicked in to stop the threat quicker than anyone else.
