Public Events Require Secure Preparation and Planning

Americans are still reeling from the horrific mass casualty vehicle attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans where a driver rammed a truck into a crowd killing more than 14 people and injured dozens more on January 1st of this new year.

Whether large or small, any event in any city or town is vulnerable, especially those spread over several blocks or miles as they become difficult security issues to solve. Many times, the events affect not only the people participating, but also those in the area who don’t want to be part of it or who are not aware it is occurring. There are even those who become visibly angry because they cannot cross a street or because they have to wait periodically.

A parade route, race, concert, or outdoor venue of any size may have dozens of security gaps that need to be covered, requiring high numbers of personnel to get everyone in and out safely. Streets have wide routes to approach and require different measures to block and secure them properly.

Plan a Risk Assessment

Risk assessment of outside venues and routes, physical security measures, and the number of personnel required to staff these types of events should all be reviewed well before each upcoming event every year. A threat assessment team should always review all threats that may arise. Routes and property must be walked by security planners to look for any vulnerabilities.

Consult with Outside Agencies

Outside security professionals with training and experience can assist, offer advice, and review event plans. Use city maintenance, groundskeepers, waste vehicles, local police, and contract security to secure and watch the street routes and the event property.

Think Outside the Box

Keep your imagination open to the possibility of any threat, large or small, or you won’t prepare properly. As humans, we tend to overfocus on single things and bias can enter our thought process. All of us need to remind each other constantly not to become complacent. We need to plan on a scale that it can and will happen so that we can effectively, and hopefully, stop any event from ever happening.
